Bhutan’s unwavering commitment to preserving 70% of its land under forest cover embodies its unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness, which prioritizes environmental sustainability and spiritual well-being over material pursuits. This dedication has ensured the preservation of an unspoiled landscape, characterized by sparkling rivers and streams that support nearly 50 species of fish, including the brown trout (Salmo trutta), snow trout (Schizothorax progastus), and the highly sought-after Golden Mahseer.
The brown trout, introduced to Bhutan in the 1930s from hatcheries in India’s Kashmir Valley, swiftly adapted and became a major attraction for anglers. Various regions, such as Haa, Paro, Punakha, Wangdue Phodrang, Bumthang, and the southern areas, offer ample fishing opportunities. To accommodate the burgeoning interest, the government has relaxed restrictions, permitting fly fishing under a strictly enforced “catch and release” policy. However, obtaining special permits is still necessary in certain zones.
