Overview

Bhutan’s unwavering commitment to preserving 70% of its land under forest cover embodies its unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness, which prioritizes environmental sustainability and spiritual well-being over material pursuits. This dedication has ensured the preservation of an unspoiled landscape, characterized by sparkling rivers and streams that support nearly 50 species of fish, including the brown trout (Salmo trutta), snow trout (Schizothorax progastus), and the highly sought-after Golden Mahseer.

The brown trout, introduced to Bhutan in the 1930s from hatcheries in India’s Kashmir Valley, swiftly adapted and became a major attraction for anglers. Various regions, such as Haa, Paro, Punakha, Wangdue Phodrang, Bumthang, and the southern areas, offer ample fishing opportunities. To accommodate the burgeoning interest, the government has relaxed restrictions, permitting fly fishing under a strictly enforced “catch and release” policy. However, obtaining special permits is still necessary in certain zones.

Trip Reviews

The scenery was worth it alone. I’m not an avid fisher, but I joined my husband and still enjoyed the peaceful riversides. Might’ve liked more options for non-fishing activities on slower days, but the guides were kind and flexible.

Nora Smith

It was great to join visitors on a fishing-focused itinerary. Sharing traditional techniques and river stories added so much fun. Group sizes were manageable and equipment was well maintained. Would recommend this to serious hobbyists.

Dorji Wangdi

This tour offered much more than I expected — great fishing, yes, but also nature, temples, and warm local hospitality. I caught my biggest brown trout ever! Just bring warm socks — the rivers are ice-cold even in summer.

Melissa Hart

Fishing in the rivers of Bhutan was a dream. The trout were healthy and the water pristine. I especially enjoyed fishing near Haa Valley. The guides respected conservation rules, which as a professional, I really appreciated.
