At the heart of Bhutan’s cultural festivals, the Cham dances embody myth and meditation. Masked dancers, adorned in rich silks and brocade, perform stories of gods and demons triumphing over ignorance. Drums, cymbals, and horns fill Paro Dzong’s courtyard, creating an atmosphere both divine and dramatic.
At dawn on the festival’s final day, a monumental Thongdrel, a sacred tapestry depicting Guru Rinpoche, is unfurled from the fortress wall. The Bhutanese believe that witnessing it brings liberation and spiritual merit. This moment of devotion, wrapped in the golden light of sunrise, is the festival’s most revered event.
The Paro Valley transforms into a sea of colour as locals don their finest kira and gho, sharing food, laughter, and prayers. Visitors are welcomed like family, witnessing a living culture where joy and spirituality coexist.
